Directed by Arthur Hiller (Love Story, The Hospital), from a script by Tina and Lester Pine, Popi is a funny and heartwarming tale of an eccentric father's outrageous scheme to give his sons a better life. Puerto Rican single father Abraham (Arkin) is struggling to raise his two sons, determined to keep the dark realities of poverty at bay. But as he watches his boys slip deeper into the ghetto, Abraham tries one zany tactic after another, until he seizes upon an outlandish plan to give his boys a better life: he sets them adrift in a boat off the Florida coast, hoping they will be rescued and raised by a wealthy family! But things don't work out as planned and Abraham's dreams are shattered when his kids are taken in by authorities and he is declared an unfit father. And in a final heart-rending showdown to win his boys back, Abraham takes a courageous stand--risking everything--for the chance to hold on to the one thing he loves the most...his family.
