When a buttoned-down insurance salesman John Nolan (Jeff Goldblum) runs into a holdup gone wrong, a criminal named Auggie Rose winds up dying in his arms. The salesman, bored with his own life, decides to take on the ex-con's identity, meeting the pen-pal girlfriend (Anne Heche) who has never met him face-to-face and hiding everything from his real girlfriend. Delving deeper and deeper into an existence that is not his own, Nolan is unprepared when the consequences of his actions become clear and he is forced to justify his deception. This is an unusual thriller about one man's quest for identity.
