Next - Stephane Grapelli in New Orleans - There are not many jazz musicians who perform for over a half century and manage to retain the youthful exuberance of Stephane Grapelli. Proof lies in this video performance shot in a New Orleans French Quarter club. All you need to do is watch Stephane's face as the legendary violinist and three young European musicians, Martin Taylor, guitar, Patrice Caratini, bass, and Marc Fosset, guitar, gracefully romp through a wealth of jazz standards. Described by jazz critic Leonard Feather as among the handful of genuine masters of jazz violin, Grappelli was self-taught. He grew up in turn-of-the century Paris and at 15 was playing piano for silent films. There I discovered jazz and my vocation and kissed Amadeus goodbye, he said. In the thirties he was a charter member of the famed Quintet of the Hot Club in Paris and decades later was still touring the world, performing with musicians of every age with a precise, elegant and forceful style that spanned generations. Grappelli died in 1997 at age 89. Stephane Grappelli In New Orleans offers a front row seat for watching--and hearing--a master at work. Tracks: Cheek to Cheek Love for Sale, Shine, Are You in the Mood, Armando Rhumba, I Got Rhythm, Someone to Watch Over Me, I Get a Kick Out of You, You Are the Sunshine of My Life, After You've Gone, Ol' Man River, Sweet Georgia Brown, Honeysuckle Rose and Daphne. Previous - Steely Dan/Aja Classic Albums - A vivid portrait of a '70s record that is still as fresh and memorable today as when it was released more than two decades ago. Pioneering pop/jazz band Steely Dan, formed by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker in the early seventies, had already secured five Top 40 albums before the release of Aja in 1977. Aja, however, was to prove to be the biggest selling album of Steely Dan's illustrious career, reaching Number 3 on the Billboard chart and spending a year in the Top 40. Becker and Fagen, renowned for their relentless perfectionism in the recording studio, recall the history of an album that was a year in the making, but rewarded with a Grammy Award and three hit singles. Steely Dan's Aja has proven to be one of the most outstanding jazz-rock albums in the history of popular music and now its story is told in this fascinating documentary.
